I've gotten faster since October, mainly due to going from my 15kg hybrid to a 10kg Secteur:smile: does this count or am I missing the point here;)

Just looked for last year & my peek monthly average speed was in december last year... 18.92mph... that said last year I stayed within 0.5mph for every month. Impressive thing is that Oct & the latter half of Nov were faster this year despite me doing more miles per week.

Definitely slower for me,
summer is usually 53-57 minutes vs 1:00-1:10 in winter, I put it down to a number of things including more clothes=more drag (I think my jacket alone is worth a good 1-2km/h off my normal cruising speed) and there seems to be more traffic in winter on my commute (I go slower past all the cars) - as well as all the other factors mentioned here.

In wet, watch out for diesel, but I must admit, my Conti 4 Seasons are absolutely awesome.......6 months on, very sticky tread still....rear has a fair few cuts, but the casing is sound.....

As an everyday..23mm tyre and quick.....buy...NOW.................. weekends...get the Mitch Pro Race out in Matching Colours.....Gok Wan.....where are you ?

In the summer I ride with a t-shirt and no gloves. Therefore I can not only see, but operate the countdown on my watch, seeing if I can match the target of 13 minutes to the mid point, and then 13 minutes to my destination. So when I get on the quieter bits, instead of relaxing I am reminded of the passage of time, and the need to get a move on to beat the clock.

In winter I wear a long sleeved top and gloves. These stop me seeing the display, and makes using the buttons much more difficult. Hence I am not chasing time and take a bit longer.

So yes, I do commute slower in the winter than the summer....

Cycling is slower for me in the winter as there is usually more of a head wind or im being pelted with rain. Other than that there isnt much in it.
Also the wear on your components over the year could be the reason for 1.5 MPH drop.

In the winter I notice that my average speed tends to drop. I think it is because it feels like you're going a lot faster than you really are when it's dark. Last night I was nearly 25 minutes slower coming back from Tesco. I think that was due to the wind picking up quite badly and my getting carried away with BOGOF toiletries (several bottles of mouthwash is quite heavy you know!), so weighed myself down quite well then.
