I can drive and have a full licence. For most of my commutes 8mi it's normally cheaper/easier to bike. Plus I am 19 so insurance is laughable, plus I would probably bike less if I had a car (I am afraid of that).

I half drive half cycle at the moment, weather doesn't help, but I get to cycle for up to four hours a day at work anyway:smile:

Given some of the greener members on here I hesitate to admit I have a landrover Discovery! I don't feel it really necessary to excuse it given where I live, and my pastimes but most importantly I can get lots of bikes into it. Which is nice.

I am not knocking you from a green perspective. But, I looked at a Disco and was unimpressed by the luggage area. Yes, it is tall but very short.

The Disco 3 has a big enough load space to fit two bikes with the wheels off in the boot alone. Fold the second row of seats down and I can load two or three bikes in without dropping the wheels. My record is five MTBs with front wheels off. Versatility is the key!

With careful packing, it's been known to fit six bikes in the back my pickup-with-truck-top, two on the roof and a further two stood on the tailboard.

And a Bompton on the passenger seat.

I do around 15000 miles/year in my car. Mainly commuting. Public transport would take longer than cycling but I invariably need to drive while I'm at work too. I do around 2500 miles/year as leisure on my bike.

I don't feel too guilty about it either.

I drive at work and have my own car and I must admint I quite enjoy driving. The car is a necessity for shopping, visiting relatives and ferrying folk to hospital appointments etc, but at the same time I'm also delighted to have cut my mileage a fair bit since getting a bike. It's just a pity the money I hoped to save on petrol seems to have been spent in places like Wiggle!

Old Icelandic?

cyclists need to know to read and write the secrets?

Close. 'Runes', not 'secrets' - although of course the distinction may often be unclear.

Thanks
I did some bits of things like Old Norse, Old Icelandic, Gothic, Old English etc at York Uni, and have just started picking up again the Swedish I did there, so seeing those sorts of letters piqued my interest.

I commute and use my cycle for shopping, as does my good lady, we use the car for family stuff, we need it.

I dream about when the kids are older and I don't need to own a car.

Lesiure riding is split 50/50 between cycling and my motorbike/scooter and ideally I'd like just to own a cycle and a scooter.
