Get rid of norton while your at it. Get rid of windows based 'security' addons. Use your ISP router firewall and put avast/avg on your machine. A lot of problems will magically go away.

I found a Trojan virus on a shop bought original norton security disk once. Never pay for virus protection, it's likely that they might feel they have to justify their existence for the yearly fee.

You can find the Norton Removal Tool here. It's the only thing that seems to get rid of all Norton components.

There's not much point having anti-virus so sludgy you have to turn it off temporarily. Get rid, as above, then install the free version of Avast, then, if you really rely on reinstalling Windows, I'd suggest installing and running advanced systemcare and defraggler - both free - and use them both once a week or so as a matter of routine.

+1 for ditching Norton. I use MSIE which is free and works. I also use Defraggler every week and CCleaner almost daily: oh, and Chrome rather than IE.

I've not seen Advanced System Care before, Swee'pea99 - do you rate it better than CCleaner?

Internet Explorer is notoriously crap, so if that's your browser, ditch it and get either chrome or firefox.

What version of windows are you running, and how old is your computer? many news sites pull in shoot loads of adds from other servers so that could be slowing everything down, especially if you have an older/lower spec machine.

Right! My anti-virus stuff is rubbish. So is my browser. I have a faint suspicion that if I told you which PC and version of Windows I have, you would tell me to junk the whole bleeding lot. Bog off!
