Does anyone bother remembering phone numbers now?

My memory isn't what it used to be (even at only 53 ) but ive got more chance of remembering numbers than i have names.
Work in an office with a landline, thats the best way to engraine (sp) numbers in your head. If you ring the same people often enough...you remember. Ive still got phone numbers in my head i havn't used in 10 years.

Part numbers as well. I used to work in an engineering stores with thousands of different parts. I could reel off part numbers no problem.
An engineer would come for a part..'have you got a microswitch for a fork truck steering column ?'
'which one, direction or stop...a 1004005-001 or a 1028581-001 '
'FFS...just give me one will ya

I havnt used those numbers in 15 years, they're still there ...and a lot more.

I know my home number, my dads home number, my own mobile number and the local curry take-away number and that's about it. When I had my own business prior to 2007 I could reel off dozens of customers phone numbers but now can't even remember the number of my wifes mobile despite it having been unchanged for about 8 years. I think the problem is down to frequency of use, all the common numbers I need are programmed in as speed dials so the number is never keyed and rarely even seen.

I work with computers so have a ton of my own passwords to remember, as well as customers' stuff. I keep a record, of course, but I still astonish myself by remembering the login to a router I haven't see in three years.

Despite this I can recall only ten phone numbers and have, on occasion, forgotten my PIN. Whoops.

On a similar vein - who finds it easier to remember the keystrokes rather than the actual characters?

Passwords - I don't use very many ... as it is I can't remember which ones go with which accounts ... and often have to resort to the email me a new one option.

And I definitely remember the pattern rather than the actual number for pin numbers. Occasionally I forget and then try too hard. Then the only way to get out of the situation is to talk about something else whilst I let my fingers do the PIN number without my brain being involved.

Hmm, I know my mobile number, my landline number and an ex's home phone number (typically, the only one I'm not speaking terms with ) but no others. We didn't have a phone when I was a kid so at one point I had all my mates' numbers memorised but not any more. Sometimes I'm lucky if I remember what I've saved someone as in my mobile. I need a telepathic phone!

We used to try and make up words for each other's telephone numbers from the 3 letters under each number on the old phone dials...1 [ABC], 2[DEF] etc.... that was when our old number was 'Rothwell 6635.... could get awkward!

I have not memorised any mobile numbers, I'm in the same boat as Vernon on that.

However I can remember the house phone number being 46, when the exchange was still manually operated, then they changed it to 246 and we got dial tone!

My kids' birthdays are my downfall I know the days and I know the months. I just can't combine them correctly.

Don't worry. When new kids come to the club, or dads are putting their kids details down on race signing on sheets, I can pretty well guarantee that about half have to ask their offfspring what their birthdays are.

Not the mums, tho'.

I think if you dial a number on a regular basis, you will soon remember the number. The problems start when you save a number on your mobile and only ever use the speed dial functions so that you never actually dial the number, you have no hope of ever remembering it.

i also suprise myself with the amount of commands i can remember, for instance logging onto an old switch and realising my fingers are typing before i can remember the actual words to start looking up and altering vlans.

i get the same on the guitar, pure muscle memory for songs where previously i've had to have the sheet in front of me to guide.
