I have no problems on my flat bar hybrid with big mileage,i sometimes do it on the fixed if i don't have to carry much outdoor gear and that has aero bars......never have liked dropped bars for some reason.
You should be ok as long as you don't push too hard and give your body a chance to get used to the extra mileage. Listen to your body and take the odd day off if you do feel tired - otherwise you could leave yourself vulnerable to colds and flus.
I'd recommend a tourer/audax bike that can take mudguards and a rack to give you some protection from the weather. Don't underestimate the mental effort a long commute like this will take when the weather is bad.
my commute does not make me tired,if the weather is nice i will put a extra 10 miles on it some times, always sparky in the morning, always go to bed late due to my job, good slow release breakfast kids sorted and i am off by 8am ,last week i awoke to a puncture and i drove and was clucking by lunch time
I'd stick to your cheaper road bike for college; depending on where I'm based at I'll either use my best road bike if it's in the secured bike cage or the winter hack if it's on the stands at the other campus.
I do a 20mile round trip on a MTB with semi slicks and it was a bit tiring for a month (from zero cycling over winter) and now it's easy and spend all the time daydreaming and extend the home trip to make it up to 30miles plus if the weather is good. I would really not bother too much on the bike, you will get used to the commute very fast and like others have said feel bad when you miss it.
Yes, very. I have a long commute, with a physical job. If I take it easy on the commute it's not bad, I can ride all week, but if I add a bit of Intensity, then that usually wipes me out for a couple of days.
There should be no reason why you shouldn't use a road bike for that distance - it's what they are designed for. Could also keep an eye out for second hand Ribble Winter Trainers - plenty about !
