Does mine or your car have a catalytic converter? I'm asking as they're being stolen around here

Someone is going around stealing catalytic converters in Great Harwood. Had mine done in Mercer Street in the early hours of last Friday. Cost me three days work and the price of a new exhaust system! May struggle to pay my bills this month thanks to thieving muppets!

My other halfs gran had hers stolen over the weekend -- she is late 70's. On Church Street

Has it been reported to the police?

The above were copied off a local Facebook page. How do we know if we have a catalytic converter? Are they easy to steal? Is it possible to prevent them being stolen...if you have one fitted?🤔

Any car made after 1992 would have a CC as it was made law in the Uk for all new cars. Stealing them is a simple case of taking an angle grinder or electric saw to either end (cutting it out of the exhaust system). As with anything, it has become easier due to more affordable and powerful cordless tools. There's no real way of preventing it as far as I'm aware, other than parking your car close to where you sleep so you can hear it. not sure if such activity would set off the car alarm or not?

Which might not be a blessing, but a danger in disguise. Around 30 ago I confronted some thieves tying to steal the alloy wheels off my XR2, parked outside my then house. Something woke me up. I looked out the window, saw them, ran outside to confront them, making them run off. Would I do that in these days of 'no fear of the law' violent days? Definitely not! I'd just have to sit back and watch them steal whatever!

I wouldn't worry too much. They tend to get stolen from hybrids especially as the cat's are less 'dirty'. All petrol cars have them, but usually they aren't easy to get unless it's a Toyota Hybrid. SIL had her Prius cat cut off in the middle of Tesco car park in daylight. Insurance covered it but they had to pay for a 'cat protector' - wire cage, but the insurance said they would not cover a second theft.

Some cars are easier to get at the cats. On our cars, the cat's are right up by the exhaust manifold, and not vulnerable underneath.

One of my kitcars has a manufacturer cat fitted, it's worth about £600 I did wonder about changing it out for an aftermarket one before I sell it.

I got £300 for my cat. They even arranged the courier to pick it up.
