Does your B&Q have one of these?

At three of the local B&Qs these contraptions have appeared at the exits. One has to walk past them. I asked staff if they are cameras, I object to being filmed,* and was told no. I'm sure it's security related, at a guess anyone attempting to walk out with a security tagged item would trigger an alarm and a camera in this thing?

Or aliens have landed and think they are incognito at your local B&Q.

* Yes, I know, I'm filmed everywhere but not quite so blatantly.

Maybe one would have been handy when my Cannondale, SL4 double padlocked, was stolen outside Hamtun B&Q right in front of the 'security' guards viewpoint over the car park 🤷‍♂️

It's a remote camera security surveillance contraption, they're usually left on building sites/roadworks, the security person sees the ne'er do well via the camera, which is motion activated, and can shout at them from their hiding place miles away

They are often used on building sites and are motion sensor controlled as a way of deterring theft of materials and illegal entry to properties. Sometimes remotely monitored.

Interesting to see them deployed in a retail setting, assumed it’s to deter theft of anything outside the store.

Is there any signage warning of CCTV? If there isn’t, they are in breach of the law.

Excellent, this is four folk who've come up with what it is and my suspicion of a camera being involved was correct. I've never noticed any CCTV signage, or cameras for that matter, at our local B&Qs. I'll check next time I visit.

In one store it's deployed internally between the tills and the exit door. One is forced to walk towards it. Unless, it contains a trigger to detect anyone carrying a tagged item it must film everyone passing by. Others are external.

Someone at B&W has video footage of me taking photos of their security devices. Does this mark me out as suspicious??

Why do you think someone on the shop floor would know if it had a camera? Management would know as they put them there. But its their store, they do not have to tell you anything.

I worked for security services for over 30 years. If you do not want to be on camera, do not leave your house and keep the curtains closed.

A good example: There was a murder in Hull. The offender left his house, found a victim. He raped and murdered her and was home, all in 20 minutes. They had hours of CCTV footage of him.

Wherever you go you are being filmed. You are being tracked by your car, your watch, your phone.

It has never bothered me.

UNfortunately it is a sign of the times. Many staff, especially in somewhere big, are not told or trained properly in how their store is set up, managed and what the rules are. They all have different opinions which is probably not the individual staff members' fault
