We just went with pet plan for our cat. Highly recommended by the vet, but to be fair they probably had a vested interest ala commission. Have to say though their customer service team were excellent on the phone. By no way the cheapest, but I am confident I have an excellent product.
As others have said (on this and other insurance threads) you get what you pay for. One particular company is by a very long chalk the loyalty leader in this market, despite being among the most expensive.
Having said that, I am not exactly an impartial commentator...

I can't personally recommend one to use, but I can recommend 1 to avoid E&L renown for not paying out if they can get away with it
We don't bother with pet insurance now & even out staffie X that has cost us in excess £1500 (tetanus treatment & knee joint operation) & we are still in pocket compared to paying a monthly premium
I think petplan may fund a bit of research within the university vet schools but practices don't get commission from them. We just advise based on our experience of dealing with various companies and I'd definitely agree with avoiding E&L! Most vets recommend them because they reliably pay out for the client and they are good to deal with.
