I'm in the process of making a website and need somewhere to host it.

however this is the first time i've sorted hosting out and don't really know where to go for it, i've had someone suggest 123-reg and someone else say not to use them but to use go daddy

anyone know a good, cheap and reliable web hosting company? i don't expect that much traffic and the site is just html from dreamweaver

so any recommendations?

thanks

No complaints about 123reg for domain registration, but I've never used them for hosting so can't comment.

I changed my hosting service to zen a few months ago on recommendation from a friend and am really happy with their service. Very efficient in setting up and great customer service on the telephone.

I use SupaNames.com to host a cycling club web-site. I don't maintain the site, I just organized the hosting and domain name for them.

It costs about £16 per year, and as far as I know has been perfect for what they want, very reliable and cheap; however, they don't use anything except static HTML pages - nothing fancy at all.

I've used http://www.heartinternet.co.uk/ and found them to be good. They even offer a free hosting option for simple low traffic sites - so you just pay for the domain name.

I've also heard good things about 34sp, zen and positive internet (all mentioned above).

I've used 123-Reg for my domain names for a number of years and never had any issues with them.

For my web hosting, I use Lunarpages. Loads of bandwidth, lots of disk space, mySQL, PhP etc etc, as well as Fantastico which will update your WordPress installs etc to the new version at the click of a button, rather than lots of manual faffing about. Feature-heavy hosting if you're going to need it, for not too much money per month !

I think Positive Internet host the CycleChat server. But regardless of that they have a good reputation.

After some mediocre UK experiences I went looking overseas where there are some excellent deals - even with the weak pound. Hostmonster in Utah were good. I only left them (after two years) because I moved to my own server. GoDaddy are a huge domain registrar who I've had ok dealings with. But they absolutely plague you with email adverts and of course you can't block them because occasionally they need to get in touch!

In general terms, check the usage policy especially when it comes to bandwidth. Obviously 'Unlimited' is never actually unlimited. But there is a heck of a difference between companies who will sensibly discuss the issue when you have a blip one month, and those who start hammering you with charges.

Your not wrong there lad!

Been with them for 7+ years now and can't fault them.

Never been charged anything extra for bandwidth and when my server's HDD trashed itself, their support guy worked right through the night with me to install a new HDD and get going again (flippin 'eck that was a long weekend!!!) - I was hosting 30+ client sites at the time too!!!

They're not cheap, but they are good - and that counts when the doo-doo hits the spinny thing!!! ;)

Have you had a look at UK2.net as a cheaper alternative?

Cheers,
Shaun

Eukhost have superb real-time live chat technical service. You just type your query in and lo and behold a real person answers straight away.

Superb.

Tell 'em I sent you.

;)

I have a domain with Eukhost and their control panel is useless. Maybe you get a better control panel if you contract their hosting too but I don't recommend having hosting and domains registered with the same company.

I have a few domains with Godaddy and they are very good - their control panel is very flexible and you can do customise your domain whichever way you want.

As far as hosting is concerned I'd say to make sure you know what your needs are before contracting the host company.
