I've used http://www.heartinternet.co.uk/ and found them to be good. They even offer a free hosting option for simple low traffic sites - so you just pay for the domain name.

Avoid them! They oversell really badly. Avoid 1and1 too!

I use a company called http://www.resellerszoom.com and think they're really good (you'd want to use their hostingzoom.com division though).

I've also used http://www.hostgator.com and would really recommend them too.

As for domains I use http://www.namecheap.com and I've started registering a few .co.uks though 123reg and had no problems so far. I've used godaddy but I'm not a massive fan of their system. I think I've got domains registered at a few other, more or less unheard of companies. At work we get most of ours through 123reg.

I used to own and run a UK web hosting business (Affordahost.co.uk). I can't vouch for that business any more, but if you're interested I can probably set you aside some space on my server for a reasonable price. Just shoot me a PM if you're interested in all the details...(the websites I've got hosted are in my sig (not youtube obviously)).

I'd second the "avoid 1&1 Internet" too.

They ripped me off to the tune of £140 on 'free' domain name registrations, then told me to go through their email & fax cancellation process to sort it out. Result ? They kept the £140 and I was not allowed access to the domains I'd paid all that money for, because I'd cancelled them and forfeit my rights to them....

I'm not going to go into the full details as it's too long-winded and painful. There was at one point a class-action in the process of being raised by a growing band of people on the web who'd been ripped off in the same scam, but I had to bow out as it would have meant putting up my own money and risking losing it if we lost. Being in debt anyway at the time. I couldn't risk it.

Have you ever tried cancelling or actually tried getting a response from their support? Do you just use their domain service, or hosting too?

I took them up on some free .info domains many years ago and I wished I hadn't bothered in the end. 1and1 seem to be able to attract people who don't really know what they're doing, just because they can afford adverts in glossy high street magazines. No offence.

Avoid 1and1 like the plague!! My experience of 123reg so far is good, but I've no idea what loops and hurdles I'll have to go through to cancel....Namecheap is a bit more expensive, but their support is reasonable and they don't make you fill in billions of forms to cancel a domain.

You do need to be careful about processes to cancel the domain. I once bought some .be domains of someone and didn't realise you had to tell them when you wanted to cancel them. Long story short they kept sending threatening letters asking for sums of money + admin costs. They eventually got bored of me ignoring them, but it was quite worrying.

Yeah, I've cancelled a couple of domain names without any problem, although I was asked to fax confirmation. And had one technical problem that they replied to promptly and kept me updated on a regular basis until it was fixed.

Very few companies require confirmation of cancellation...just, if you don't pay you don't get..which is a much better system!
