Have you seen what the managers of them earn per annum? Have a google!
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politics/10224104/30-charity-chiefs-paid-more-than-100000.html

I have worked in many organizations (charitable) on a voluntary basis and seen time and time again how the 'management' keeps the good stuff for themselves (be it food, clothes...anything).
It is a waste of time and your money.

Raise money sure, but make sure those that need it get it, don't end up lining some fat cat's pockets please.
Raise money and hand out cash to sick kids in hospitals or pay for some unfortunates operations. or just buy them gifts.

Thank you.

The charity I'm chair of trustees for is a blood bikes charity; it offers free out-of-hours transport services to the NHS and hospices.

How much are the management team paid? Nil. The riders? The same. No staff salaries and everything goes to the charity. The only major expenses are to the bike servicing garages, the response company we now have to contract as it's got much busier this year and fuel/new bikes.

I can understand that charities need a management structure ... but a corporate-level priced one?

Guide dogs for the blind pay more out to their management pension fund than they pay for their operational costs of looking after and training the dogs they lend out....Do I have a problem with the disingenuous tin rattling of big business charidees...heck yea !

Guide Dogs for the blind :

I am not sure where you dream these things up but from the 2012 accounts of the Guide Dogs for the Blind Charity http://www.guidedogs.org.uk/aboutus/guide-dogs-organisation/reports-accounts-and-annual-reviews/ it says

Total Staff Cost (wages, pensions, social security costs) = 40.8 £m of which pension costs are 4.6 £m
Provision of guide dogs and other mobility services = 50.3 £m

So, by my calculations : pensions costs are approx. 9% of looking after and training dogs.

Where did you get your figures ?

Charities doing difficult tasks in difficult and complex situations will necessarily need complex management structures. Unless folk actually want them to fail at what they do.

As to corporate pricing, I think a lot of folk haven't a clue what the corporate going rate is for senior jobs. I took a huge pay cut to (re)join the charity sector and I swat away 'head hunters' and former bosses offering me three or four times what I now get paid to go back into the corporate world.....

£50.3 million costs to look after 4600 dogs ? ...and you call that VFM....that is nearly £11k on each dog...how can they justify that when the dogs live in peoples homes...that is a lot of dog food.

This is a charity which has a vast income, and clearly spends the lion share of that money it raises on its workers benefits.

Value for money ? I would think that £11,000 would be considered excellent value if the dog gave you a better standard of life.

But, back to your first point .. where did you get your figures about the pension contributions ? Or did you simply make them up ??????

Well...Just be careful, ive seen a lot of corruption in the 'charities'. Best to give your money away first hand to those that need it and not trust some fat cat with it.

That's rather difficult to do if the people you want to give it to live elsewhere in the world...
