Don't know where to start

Hi guys

I am looking to get myself a bike. My max budget for everything is £1000. I have not ridden a bike for years, and looking to get myself something that is comfortable, as I will be using it to commute to work. I will not be doing a lot of road cycling, trhe route to my work is an off road cycle track. I am 6’ 3”, and not exactly slim. Anyone got any ideas on what kind of bikes to start looking at? I live West of Glasgow, and work in Glasgow City, so any advice on good bike shops locally would be handy. There is an Evans Cycles shop up the road from my work, is that a good chain?

Evans are decent, stock most brands and are very good for test rides, just need photo id and a bank card. Go have a chat, you'll probably need an xl frame size and they may need to order in for you

For paths and tracks, if rough, suspension forks will add comfort but also weight to the bike. Look at a hybrid or 29er
If good paths, suspension likely not needed, you good look at a rigid fork flat bar bike or a cyclocross or adventure bike with drop handlebars if you prefer

You probably don't need to spend a grand,keep some budget for mudguards, lights, good lock, clothing, a pannier rack possibly to get stuff off your back and onto the bike

Get a mountain bike for £300 and save yourself an awful lot of money. £1000 is steep for a first bike, especially since you don't know what you want, what you need, or whether you're going to use it.

Sorry if that's blunt. But in this case, Halfords or Decathlon.

I agree with crandoggler.A carrera subway 1 or subway 2 from halfords or a hybrid from decathlon .that would leave you plenty cash for helmet,gloves,jacket and other things you need

I've been cycling for 30 years (it's almost time for a cake stop... :-) and I still think Decathlon bikes or the Carerras from Halfords are great. Good to leave something in the budget to swap the tyres at some point too....

I am buying it through my work, so thought it would have been nice to spend the extra while I had the opportunity. But sounds like I don't need to spend that amount

Ignore the cheapies!! I say max out the grand on a hardtail mountain bike - you'll get good components for that money and a nice quick fun bike that'll go anywhere.

Try Alpine Bikes at St. Georges X, good Range in there or Decathlon at Breahead (might be 1 on the North Side.)

You'll need to discover whether your work cycle scheme voucher can be used at any retailer. If not, you may need to rethink

If you've decided to go the full whack after looking at the payments, end of scheme outlay, savings etc. look to spend £700-750 on the bike and the rest on other stuff. Evans are good in that they will price match quite a few other national retailers. Details on their site
