Forget the police I was wiped out at a junction, broken bones whiplash hip injury, and the police had strong words with him, oh and I was off work. 5 months, so I think forget about your rims n mudguards mate

Got a nudge from behind on a roundabout today, low speed, very civilised but bent rim and broken mudguard which I'd like reimbursed for.

Got the woman's mobile number at the time and mentioned paying for damages, but calling it tonight it's either not hers (likely) or someone else is pretending it's not hers (unlikely). I may have taken it down incorrectly (unlikely). So had to report it to the police (with the reg no) which I didn't really want to do - just want to make contact and get the money back.

No witnesses, but I've got a description of the woman and the damage done to her number plate.

Any ideas what the police will do from here?

My similar experience worked out well.
I was rear ended at a traffic queue. Back wheel was completely knacked and I was very cross. I stormed up to the offending offender but he reversed away like the blazes and had it away on his wheels.
I got home and calmed down and contacted the Roz to find out that the young man in question had gone immediately to a police station and admitted what he'd done. His story was that he was a little bit worried that I might have pulverized him. (I would not have done but I think his concern was justifiable under the circs')
The copper that took on the role of mediator was also a very nice chap who came to my house and acted as a go between, er between us. He asked me what would like to happen and I told him that a replacement wheel would do the trick. He relayed this to the other chap who agreed. I bought a new wheel, gave the receipt to the friendly policeman who then got the cash off the other chap and gave it to me.
I would add that I did not go stupid and pretend that my wheel was very expensive and made from rare metals or polymers. It was a bog standard Raleigh racer circa 1990 so I got a very standard wheel for it for about £25 at the time.
I would like to hope that your situation woks out as well but it sounds like they are already playing the silly buggers with you. I'm pleased I never had to make a decision about whether or not to cut my losses and avoid the stress of chasing someone for a wheel and I hope you don't either. People should act fairly and do the right bloomin' thing. If I broke someones wheel like that I would gladly replace it, being happy that I had not caused greater damage, injury or worse. If one thinks like that it is a wonder that people act like such jerks even when they are in the wrong.

If you're not injured you're entitled to be given name and address of driver and keeper. If injured you're also entitled to their insurance details. Always get the reg number. Take photos on your phone. If they don't stop or they refuse to give all the details you're entitled to then call police from the scene.

The OP has the reg no, so for £4 make an inquiry to Motor Insurers Database.

Assuming the other driver is insured, this will give the OP the insurance company and policy number.

The OP then claims directly from the insurer.

A bit of legwork, but it often works.

i think Pale Rider has the best advice on this thread. could be £4 well spent. if she doesn't have insurance you can then inform the police and they will have to take it more seriously.

ps. if you report it to the insurance company, even if they don't pay out because there are no witnesses, the fact that an accident has been reported against her will bump her insurance up next year. win win. revenge is sweet.

The police are going to contact the driver and then put them in touch with me in a few days, hopefully they'll respond to this and I'll get reimbursed.

This is like the slowest episode of Taggart ever.....
