it always amazes me how much debris we hoover up from the entrance way carpet even though we have a door mat for people to wipe there shoes on before coming in the house , vast majority of it is small bits of grit etc etc with the occasional larger piece .

Yep, same at the entrance to my internal bike store I have one of those large industrial type rubber backed carpet mats and no matter how much I hoover it it seems to be full of crap again the next time I look. I wouldn't mind but that isn't even a frequently used door, only for me when going in/out for work. The main front door isn't too bad because I have fitted coconut matting in the porch and that is pretty good at stopping stuff getting in to the house. the coconut matting can be bought very reasonably priced off the internet in any size you want.

We've actually got two doormats on the main entrance now. The first is one of those rubbery ones that holds water or sand beneath the mesh that you walk on, until it's tipped outside every few days and that seems to work well and has cut down how much is being trampled further.

What I think happens with the conventional fabric mat is this: the first person wipes debris off their shoes onto the mat and continues in with cleanish shoes; then the second person wipes their debris off while collecting the first person's debris which they then carry a step or two into the entrance; then the third carries the second's debris in a few steps while picking up and redepositing some of the first's even further in

Shoes off here too - I didn't fork out umpteen quid a sq.metre on decent carpet for some lazy oink to spread their crap over it.

I always take my shoes off in other people's houses - that's how I was brought up. My Mum didn't have much money and had to make her carpets last a long time - so, as kids, we were taught to always take our shoes off.

Total ban on outdoor shoes in our house.

Outdoor shoes have to come off in the hall here too.

Shoes off here too -

I won't be coming to visit any of you lot then! :okay:
That is actually another of my (growing list of) pet hates. Unless my shoes are contaminated with something nasty, then why should I be made to take them off to step on your precious carpet? Floors are floors, and people should be able to walk on them. The worst are people who insist on visitors taking their shoes off because they have fitted white/beige carpets. WTF were you thinking when you made that choice of colour for a FLOOR covering?
The carpets in my house are blue, grey, dark red, or rusty orange. As long as you aren't bringing in dog sh1t or obvious mud, you are welcome to walk on them. An occasional hoovering sorts out any dry dirt which may find it's way onto them.
