We all wear Haflinger slippers in the house, much the same as the klettschuhe you are given to wear when you stay in an Alpine mountain refuge.

The quality is superb, you can nip to the shops if you want to wear them outdoors and they last for years.

I'm finding it difficult to understand why people would want to wear shoes at home and, so vehemently, in other people's homes'.

What kind of shoes do they put on in the morning when they get up? I have different shoes, and I choose them after the activity or occasion. Hiking boots, cycling shoes, smart shoes, etc. So what kind of shoe does the at-home shoe-wearer put on first thing in the morning, or when they're watching TV, for example? Are they the same shoes they'd use for playing football in, ascending Mt Everest, painting the Forth road bridge, or walking the dog?

At what point in the day does the at-home shoe-wearer first put on their shoes? Or do they sleep in them?

On behalf of most males, or at least the ones I know..... We get up, get dressed, and that includes putting on a pair of shoes. Those same shoes stay on our feet until we get undressed for bed! Exceptions obviously apply, e.g. for cycling any more than a few local miles I might get changed into my version of cycling kit which may or may not include a change of shoes (depends which bike I'm using).

I find it difficult to understand why people would want visitors to their home to take off their shoes and walk about in their sweaty, smelly, bacteria infested socks! I'm quite sure there are worse things lurking in (some) people's socks than you'll ever find on the soles of their shoes. xx(. I obviously exempt myself from that condition, as my feet are kept clean and socks changed daily - so my feet are fragrant and bacteria free , but not everyone is so anal about personal hygiene.

It must be quite embarassing for the host/hostess, having requested a visitor to remove their shoes at the door, to then see the state of their socks and presumably have to retract the shoe removal request with a diplomatic "Errrm, on second thoughts, could you just put your shoes back on again? You clatty nobber".

To answer that question, I've been wearing these since I got up this morning. I've been out driving in them, walking, and if today had been a work day then I would have worn them for that too. I wiped them on the doormat when I came in; they're good as new! Commonly known as "Mars Bar" shoes*.....

Please note that the carpet has not disolved under them.

*Mars Bar shoes? I wear them to work, rest, and play  (you need to be of a certain age).

We've actually got two doormats on the main entrance now. The first is one of those rubbery ones that holds water or sand beneath the mesh that you walk on, until it's tipped outside every few days and that seems to work well and has cut down how much is being trampled further.

What I think happens with the conventional fabric mat is this: the first person wipes debris off their shoes onto the mat and continues in with cleanish shoes; then the second person wipes their debris off while collecting the first person's debris which they then carry a step or two into the entrance; then the third carries the second's debris in a few steps while picking up and redepositing some of the first's even further in
Doesn't work that way.
