You remember the basic test of reading a number plate from 20m away? I wear glasses all the time and can still pass that without them, but more than 1 in 60 drivers failed the number plate test when police screened 3000 drivers. If that's representative, there's more than 700,000 people basically driving blind.

And the law probably should be tightened. 40% of drivers haven't had an eyetest in the last two years, and I remember from past surveys that over 20% admit to having difficulty reading standard road signs.

Major new study finds 720,000 motorists driving on Britain’s roads with defective eyesight - Driver Trainer – https://www.drivertrainer.org/major...ng-on-britains-roads-with-defective-eyesight/

You can have tunnel vision so bad you would be legally classed as clinically blind and still pass thst test.

Anyone causing serious injury or death with a vehicle should receive lifetime bans. This negligent prat got off lightly compared to his victim.

How could he not see her

easy

He didn;t look
wonder what his phone records say for the minute or so before the "accident"

That could be the case, but also possible he wasn't doing the conscious looking for things other than cars (which has the same effect as not looking, so is not an excuse). If you're not aware of the 'invisible gorilla' syndrome, where the brain deletes what it considers to be 'noise', it's well worth taking into consideration whenever you can when drivers are making (sub)conscious decisions. It's why it's worth moving out from the side of the road if a car is waiting at a side road: even if you think they've looked at you, the brain can still delete you from their perception. It's why the slogan "Think once, think twice, think bike" was so on the nose.

Thats a well understood phenomenon and easily overcome by constant scanning and not lazily staring dead ahead at some indeterminate spot a short distance ahead of the bonnet like more and more drivers seem to do.

Next time youre following a car in good daylight look to see how often the drivers head moves. It wont be often. Mirrors go largely unused, and the greater landscape ignored bar a small section dead ahead.

Its lazy, and to not put in the effort required to not only look button actually see is wilfully negligent.

Quite so. It's illuminating when you see videos of police drivers or riders give running commentaries as they blue-light at speed, as they are clearly well-trained to anticipate every risk and to compensate for what the brain does if you're not scanning for things other than cars.
