My daughter has two cats, one of them was hit by a car two weeks ago and ended up loosing half it's tail and costing 900 quid in vet fees. She just phoned to say the other one's been hit now, it's at the vet's but doesn't look promising

Sorry to hear about that.

Our cat was hit by a car 7 or 8 years ago. It ran over and crushed his hind leg. Miraculously the vet fixed it up and we had to take him in twice a week for a long period so they could change the dressings whilst the flesh and fur regrew (all the bones were exposed). He is a very good natured cat and still with us albeit with a limp.

Hope it goes ok for yours.

Sorry to hear about that, Dave, I hope the cats recover.

My cat was hit by a car 17 years ago, he lost all the flesh off his back leg which had to be amputated. He did really well afterwards and crossed Rainbow Bridge just a couple of months ago at the age of 19.

Sorry to hear that Dave,

We had two cats up until new years, brother and sister cross breed Bengals 18 months old. When the boy one was hit by a car outside our house, 6 o/c in the evening. He was still alive when we found him but was in a bad way. We managed to find a Vet that was open locally new years eve of all times, but we had to do the kindest thing. A very sad evening, and one we certainly won't forget.

Sorry to hear about that- fingers crossed both of them are OK.

I work for a family business and that means sharing the office with their family cat, Dobby. I am currently working alone while the owners are on winter hols and didn't realise how attached I'd got to Dobby until she went missing for a day!

Luckily she had just gone for a long wander (she is a bit of a barn cat) and was back next day, but she had me worried!

First cat seems to have made a full recovery but the second one died Saturday night. With the benefit of hindsight, insurance would have been a very good idea as I expect they'll be another few hundred quid of vet bill on it's way. We've had a bit of a family whip round to help them out though.

We don't have pets, and I don't often have occasion to contribute to these threads, but when I was a kid we had a cat who was run over by a car (it used to play a game of 'chicken' - crouching under a parked vehicle and dashing out at the last instant).

Its leg was crushed, several compound fractures and nearly amputated. The vet's first report was unpromising: amputate or put the creature down. But my father pleaded with him, and he then agreed to try setting the bones.

I never learnt how he pulled off the miracle, but a week or two later my father drove us down to the vet's, the vet brought up a plastic crate and opened it, and there was our cat looking very drawn and disconsolate, plaster cast encasing one leg, but otherwise complete! We had to confine it to a tea-chest for several weeks and provide a litter tray: the main problem was that the cat had grown out of litter-trays and the chest became increasingly insanitary. And on one occasion it escaped and somehow managed to clamber out of an open fan-light: we found it in the garden, looking rather pleased with itself, plaster cast and all.

But it recovered. It was troubled by arthritis in the damaged leg, ever after. But it went on to live another 11 years or so.

Sorry to hear about the sad news - I hope the surviving cat lives a long life.

It'll probably be too late to get pet insurance as insurers will up the premium if there is a pre -existing condition and many maynot even insure the cat.

It is always horrible to lose a pet - my previous two pet cats got ran over- the last one in a horrible fashion. Wouldn't wish it on anyone.

Sorry to hear this, I had one ran over around 13 years ago and killed. Was not very nice to pick it up off the verge, it looked totally unmarked. I also had another one just vanish and never come back a few months before that. Since then I have never really had any grief except from fights, as cats are extremley viscious. One of my 2 cats at the age of 13 1/2 years has chronic renal failure and is on medication, this was diagnosed just over 2 years ago, so he is doing pretty well as it will eventually kill him. I guess the best way for a cat to have a long life is having it as a house cat, but one of mine more so than the other would never of been like that.

Hope the cats are ok. My cat Smokey was run over back in 1995 and was killed instantly with a broken neck and its horrible when they get mangled.

Again hope the cats are ok.

I found our neighbours cat dead on our driveway a few years back .It had been run over and was trying to get back home .Poor thing failed by two houses. They were away i kept it in a box till i could find the young lady who was looking after it .The wife was broken hearted ,she had resued it many years ago .What i found bad .Was the attitude of the person who had hit it .But i suppose seeing that it tried to make it's way home .They might not have understood the damage caused .They did not replace it either .
