I've only a minute......

There have been so-called soft-coatings in use on the continent for decades now with higher levels of efficiency. K glass is a hard coating, and its hegemony here is only due to Pilkington dominating the glass market for years, and nothing to do with the performance.

A Velux attic window and a kitchen window were cracked and misty in this rental property when I moved in 2 years ago. The landlord had them replaced by the local Cloudy2Clear franchisee.

The kitchen window was about 100 cm x 33 cm. The Velux was more like 100 cm x 66 cm. The man took about 10 minutes to measure the units and used a gadget to measure the separation of the 2 panes of glass. He told me that it also checked what type of glass the original units had.

He returned with new glass units less than a week later and fitted them in about 30 minutes.

I think the cost of replacement glass units and installation was about £160, which my landlord thought was pretty reasonable. I thought at the time that installation looked straightforward so it would be worth fitting yourself if you were ok with simple DIY.

St Gobain do a low e coating coupled with a plastic spacer and argon gas you can get a 20mm unit down to 1.6 u-value, Might have even been 1.4 from memory but i was only after 1.6 at the time for my windows .
