As an aside it is interesting to see how age has affected them differently. Hartnell was quite ill and messed up his lines constantly. Capaldi is still very sprightly indeed.

Sheer coincidence, but sitting in the pub last week with a couple of friends and one of them pointed to a figure weaving along the opposite pavement and said - there's that actor bloke....God he's pissed. And it was, and he was.

Oh and when can we hear a proper out of this world theme tune (rather than this one played on Earth based instruments)

Would these be things such as mudalins and guiterra's? And Violoams?

Unfortunately this would be fine for us oldies, but for the youngsters who are used to a lightweight Doctor with comedy turns, it could be a turn-off

I was 6 when I saw Jon Pertwee waaaay back in 1970. I think he was 50 when he took the role, so nothing against older Doctors. Tom Baker, widely regarded by many as the Doctor was about 40 when he donned the famous scarf!. I'm looking forward to the new series. Nothing against Matt smith but the show did seem to be aimed at kids wheras it can also be a wonderful adult darma. The Simpsons often gets called a kids show but there is a duality in the writing which makes it appeal to kids and adults. They've done gags about viagra and cannabis, which no 10 year old would get!.

As for the format, it could go back to 30 minutes with a cliffhanger as it worked for 26 years. Eastenders uses the old Dr Who format very effectively. But we live in the age of international TV sales to commercial stations which need 45 minute shows with 'natural breaks' timed for the commercials. The original Dr Who was made purely for the BBC so never had any. If you catch the old series on, say, UK Gold, the don't half bugger -up the show due to the ad breaks which it was never written to accommodate.

Peter Capaldi reminds me of Jon Pertwee a bit, must be the grey hair. Tom Baker used to be my favourite, but the series became very tired by the end of his incarnation. I cannot remember any earlier than Pertwee, but the series seemed pretty good when he was in charge.

BTW, I hear Neil Gaiman is writing another episode. He was asked to make the cybermen scary again. I haven't read any Neil Gaiman books but he seems to be very popular among book readers.

For me, this will be a return to the manic/dangerous slant with rather more edge to it - bring it on! Capaldi on stage as Professor Marcus in The Ladykillers was utterly brilliant, so the guy can genuinely act. And the turn in Torchwood: Children of Earth was as unlike Malcolm Tucker as it is possible to be.

They brought his daughter Kate "Tiger" Stewart in several episodes culminating in Jemma Redgrave playing her as a Unit Scientist

... and totally OT, a couple of weeks ago I met the guy who played Sergeant Benton!

My favourite story was going to a Cub event where there were various science fiction themes.

One of the Mothers started reminiscing about bits and pieces and her short acting career before she got married and had her eldest son

She mentioned in passing that she had done a couple of TV appearances as a Cyberman

How to gain instant street cred when you find out your Mother was a Cyberman!

Did Peter Capaldi not shoot his family and then himself in Torchwood? An excellent regeneration indeed.
I loved the Tom Baker Doctor. He was 'my Doctor'. I thought that Eccleston was fantastic, I liked the David Tennant Dr, I have never been quite able to get my head around the Matt Smith Dr, I always thought that he was very young - or maybe I am getting very old.

I shall be interested to watch the new storylines. I am really hoping for an improvement. Scary 'Cydermen' (sorry, a client's child calls them that and it makes me smile) would be nice.

It was called "The Silver Nightmare". It was not as good as "The Doctor's Wife" but still a great episode.

Assume it is still lots of running around gravel pits and dramatically reaching for some gizmo that look like a parker pen that will somehow save planet earth.
