Inkscape should do the trick. I use it for light vector graphics editing. You might find the interface confusing - I know I did.

I've heard good things about google sketchup, but never tried it myself.

Thanks for this; I will give it a spin and see how I get on. A couple of Q's for you first though, if you'd be so kind.
a) Can inkscape produce results like the one I gave in my first post?
b) Can I pepper you with questions when my ability and the user manual fail me?

a) I should think so, yes.
b) You may try, but the chance of me being able to help is slim - I only do the simplest of things, like boxes and arrows. I expect you'll be much better off checking out tutorials. A quick google found these ones, which look pretty good.
