due to the last few mornings being "a bit chilly" (the last three have been -3/5C) my drink of choice ( a nice ribena) has been unbearably cold and and some points slush . i have a relatively fast paced and lengthily commute down the a23 so need at times a nice drink but this cold chills me to the core and ruins all my layers an warmth build up.
how do you guys cope with the chilly mornings and eve and still stay hydrated?

I had a similar problem this morning, had just got to the top of a big hill and discovered my water bottle had frozen :eek::sad:

You can get insulated water bottles, they are not as good as a flask, but given that a steel flask is difficult to drink from on the move, a slightly warm drink will stay warm long enough for a commute. I'd go for two half filled bottles, a cold drink in one for early in the ride and a warmer fruit juice/water mix for the latter part.

How about a small pinch of salt? Never tried it myself but it might stop it slushing. Won't keep it very warm though I guess.

I imagine a hydration pack in your rucksack wouldn't freeze.

The stuff in the bladder doesn't freeze, but I've had the liquid in the tube freeze, which is annoying as you know you have plenty of unfrozen liquid, but can't get at it !
I then bought an insulated cover for the tube and that lasted over 8hrs in sub zero.

To the OP (Jdratcliffe) - how long is your ride ? If takes less than about an hour I wouldn't bother taking a drink with me, just make sure I am hydrated before I start and have a drink once finished.

How long are you on the bike for to slush a drink?

I ride 20+ miles and the water is painful on the teeth but never slushes.

Drink more often, you'll move the water around. Or just don't drink. A pint before you set off and a pint on arrival will sort out hydration, especially in weather that you're not sweating as much in.

This was my thought as well. I use a home made sports drink on club rides which contains a tea spoon full of salt over 1.5 litres and there's no real taste difference, so worth a try?
