Drinking & Driving

I sincerely hope there's no-one on here who does, but if you are at a party/bar/etc, please let this video run through your head

I've spent 12 of the past 15 years mainly working around an A&E department, so have seen far too many results of drink-driving.

I'm just glad that I'm not the one who had to break the news to the relatives (or be the Police Officer who delivers the 'death-knock')

Again, please be sensible

Death knock? You mean the Death-O-Gram as the old timers call it?

I'll have a Guinness with my Christmas dinner, and that's my alcohol consumption for the year.

With the Christmas holidays upon us I would like to share a personal experience with my friends about drinking and driving. As you may know some of us have been known to have brushes with the authorities from time to time on the way home after a "social session" out with friends.

Well, last weekend I was out for an evening with friends and had several beers followed by some rather nice red wine. Feeling jolly I still had the sense to know that I may be slightly over the limit. That's when I did something that I've never done before - I took a taxi home.

Sure enough, on the way home there was a police road block but since it was a taxi they waved it past. I arrived home safely without incident. This was a real surprise as I had never driven a taxi before, I don't know where I got it and now that it's in my garage I don't know what to do with it.

I've done it! I had many beers and then drove and have no excuses about it. I used the experience as a learning tool as I had a great opportunity to do so. Now it was entirely indoors but it did involve actual moving vehicles. It was our company's Christmas do and several of my usually hard-drinking colleagues stuck to the soft drinks. This was because we ended the evening on a go-carting track and they wanted a competitive advantage. Now I felt unaffected by the several beers consumed and would normally have had zero problems beating these guys had it been a level playing field. But the effects of that beer quickly put me at the back of our competitive field and several times I lost a lap or two by overshooting corners and spinning off the track. It was a salutary lesson to experience the actual effects of 'drunk-driving' in as realistic a scenario as possible.

It's important to remember also that you can be well over the limit the next day. It takes about an hour for the body to process a unit of alcohol, so if you had say ten pints, approx 20 units and started drinking at 8 o'clock, it would be 4 o'clock the next day before it's all out of you system.

There is a rather crass joke in there somewhere.Something along the lines of this is the age of the train.
