I don't drive, so unless I happen to get so drunk that I also decide to steal a car I should be okay  I do sometimes ride my bike after a few beers although I haven't in ages, but that tends to be away from the roads anyway.

As an even more distantly related anecdote, I used to play a driving game so much that I could reliably put in lap after lap easily within a second of eachother, but just 1 beer and youd lose a second or so over a 1min lap, 3 or 4 beers and you'd feel totally in control but lose several seconds and mistakes would be common. I found it interesting that you can feel like normal and think you're behaving as well as normal, but be noticably much less capable.

With the Christmas holidays upon us I would like to share a personal experience with my friends about drinking and driving. As you may know some of us have been known to have brushes with the authorities from time to time on the way home after a "social session" out with friends.

Well, last weekend I was out for an evening with friends and had several beers followed by some rather nice red wine. Feeling jolly I still had the sense to know that I may be slightly over the limit. That's when I did something that I've never done before - I took a taxi home.

Sure enough, on the way home there was a police road block but since it was a taxi they waved it past. I arrived home safely without incident. This was a real surprise as I had never driven a taxi before, I don't know where I got it and now that it's in my garage I don't know what to do with it.

It's nice to read this joke again, it's been awhile.

By the way, while I'm here...

...make sure you follow the Green Cross Code ....

.

Does that mean that if you've drank enough to turn green, you shouldn't drive...

don't have a driving licence. ~nothing to do here...

must say the ozzies don't pull their punches with these commercials do they? can you imagine that being shown in the uk? there'd be cries to watchdog and offcom and allsorts lol.

That's a very effective public information film. Wonder if something as graphic as that would have a similar effect were it shown in the UK?

Allegedly not... apparently research showed a lot of people, when watching a graphic advert for drink drive thought it was horrific, but couldn't put themselves as the cause of it. That's why they came out with that new advert where the barman goes through all the different characters, showing the effect it has on you - I.e. licence lost, job lost, car sold cheap, marriage in trouble. The theory is that the more personal targeting is more effective. Whether that's true or not, who knows!

What I do think the graphic adverts helped with massively was to help make drink drive socially unacceptable.
