I think the majority of drivers who text or use their mobile phone whilst driving would do the same thing.
Selfish, selfish people.

I know that road. Needs full attention. Don't they all though.

Would have saved a lot of police time if she'd owned up as well.

I'm sorry to say I see a lot of idiots on the phone while they are driving through York. I was nearly knocked down by a van whose driver turned left, he didn't indicate because he was using that hand to hold the phone and he certainly only saw me too late if I hadn't stopped.

I phoned his employer, a big London office. They would only bother to do anything if I had got his number they said.

Surely it isnt beyond the realms of technology to have the phone compulsorily fitted with an app that deactivates the phone while driving a car

It's not beyond the realms of possibility to have all cars fitted with a device that uses gps technology to mean you cannot exceed the speed limit. It's not going to happen though!

Judging from the comments highlighted by @cyclehatred on twitter, most 18 yr old drivers have the same attitude that they can get away with paying no attention to the road, and an accident will never happen to them.

Then, I think that 18 yr olds have always had that attitude really.

Giving them a mobile phone and a car at the same time seems to be asking for trouble.

This utter tool has killed a young mum foolish enough to get into his car. http://www.thisisbristol.co.uk/Shen...lled-Narmara/story-17584460-detail/story.html

Of course it's appalling that an innocent person has lost their life through the stupidity of another, but an 18 year old 'normal young woman' has also had her life ruined. I'm not making excuses for the young woman and her denial of what she did makes things worse, but she is a human being who now faces living the rest of her life with the impact of what she's done.

I sincerely hope that if I ever lose a loved one in a similar situation I will be able to consider the impact on the guilty party as well and not be baying for blood.

I don't know what the answer is, but prison sentences don't seem to be a deterrent, given the numbers of drivers I see using mobiles when driving.

Perhaps they would be a deterrent if more people were pulled up and convicted. No one cares until they get caught, and with few police on the streets, very few people get caught - they get away with it until they are actually involved in an accident, and then it's too late.

This is why Helmet Cameras work so well.

Write and explain the situation, wait until the driver denies it then send the video.

There are two other cases that have just been tried in court and in both culprits have got away with a light sentence. I'm feeling very sick at the moment. When will the legal system protect us cyclists?
A 21 year old lad who lived in the same road as a woman i work with was mowed down on his bike by a RLJ taxi driver a couple of weeks ago.The lad died a few days later. I fear the taxi driver will receive a very light sentence.
