Would putting him in jail really achieve anything apart form costing the taxpayer money?

I was reading this thread and the comparison with the muamba case sentencing. For some reason the childhood nursery rhyme "sticks and stones" came to mind. Wonder if the respective Judges ever heard it?

This is the key question, tyred.

Lengthy prison sentences in tough prisons just make new criminals as far as I can see, I see no point in locking him down in the 'Scrubs or somewhere.

I do think a spell behind bars of somewhere would concentrate the minds of other car users that killing someone is killing someone.

I can see no reason for him not to go to a low security prison, where he would mix mainly with white-collar criminals - even an open Prison such as my local - Ford Prison, where you often see the lags wandering around. I doubt he's a flight risk.

The key - as mentioned by someone (sorry forgot who) is, he has demonstrated a lethality while driving and common sense suggests he should never be allowed to drive again.

Unfortunately common sense and the motor car don't seem to coincide in the courts or the people I talk to.

I was going up a hill with my sunblind down as it was a bright evening, nearly dusk. As I went round a bend on this hill the sun was just on top of the brow of the hill and just below my sunblind. I was literally blinded, cacked myself and stopped. Even when you know about it, you can still get caught out.

Too much information! Yuck!

I think courts need to be more creative in their sentencing. How about following Numbnuts very sensible post above but in addition making/declaring that the driver, in this instance a fat slob, be only allowed to travel by bicycle for 10 years. Banned from any vehicle whether as a driver or passenger. I would whole heartedly support this. One he might get an idea of what it is like to ride on UK roads and two he might lose some feckin weight he being a fat slob exercisephobe. He should be electronically tagged for 10 years.
