Riding along a straight road, side road to the right coming up with road works just after the side road.
The road works have blocked one lane, the right hand lane from my viewpoint, with tall barriers obscuring the view.
I see a car coming the other way enter the roadworks, so I start to slow down as the lane is just wide enough for a car.
Unfortunately an unhealthy looking person in a 12 year old BMW convertible exits from the side road, on seeing me slow down they decide they must get in front of cyclist despite being unable to see the road ahead. I give a couple of toots on the horn and put my right arm try to indicate to the driver they should stop but they decide to ignore me and continue with their blind overtake.
Until that is it dawns on them there is a car coming the other way and their way is blocked.
They seem to be very angry with me for some reason and reverse back shouting " I couldn't f***ing see anything", great excuse.
Then later as they overtook me they decided to give me the bird, obviously upset that I witnessed their stupidity.

I had a similar incident this morning; I was cruising along a pretty quite housing estate road which was opening up on to the main road, a row of parked cars on my side of the road I was probably only doing 10-15mph and this stupid women in a mini sees me and instead of carrying on, as it is her right of way, and we never would have collided and I was slowing down, she decides shes going to stop, thus leaving sod all room for me to get past!!

Why are some drivers so unobservant? Or do they not know what to do when a cyclist approaches them?

They shouted at you and gave you the bird because you tooted them...and as such were criticising their error. If you'd just let them get on with it and make their own mistake they would have ignored you and likely not tried to blame you.

That said...

I would have done the same thing (whether I was on the bike, the loud bike or in the car) but its important to understand that using a horn like that (and inviting ourselves into a situation) will also invite repercussions.

Going along a narrow residential street a few weeks ago I approach a pinch point, just as I get to it parked WVM pulls out and comes straight towards me, we're obviously not going to fit through pinch point - I've got PMT so would actually rather die than give in to WVM, eventually he slows to let me through but continues to crawl towards me, he's that busy glaring at me he hits another parked up white van. Hilarious!

Yep.

Tonight, here, there is a police van turning left trying to get past. The van wheels are up the kerb and it's scraping the white "keep left" bollard. This moron in a volvo estate is sat in the middle. Police van beeps, so Volvo pulls forward even more into the way.

At this point I'm waiting in the island, crossing the cycle crossing right to left. When it becomes clear that police van isn't getting past volvo man any time soon, I carry on and am up the hill and well gone, whilst blues & twos is still stuck behind Volvo numpty who is now gesticulating wildly instead of just going up the kerb for a moment and clearing the way|

And it's supposedly cyclists who get in the way?
