now why isn't that not a surprise to me?

I thought majority of lady drivers are to horn at cyclists then anyone else. I dont think the make of a car can make that much of a difference in honking at cyclists. Exceptions for taxis drivers and buses. Unless you are on regents canal then hey its nothing.

Ever had an impatient driver behind you leaning on their horn? It's more likely to be a BMW than any other car!

Apparently motorists admit to using their horn "when a cyclist is using incorrect road positioning"

Although the study's conclusions are more like BMW drivers are more likely to admit to using the horn more often. Shame it was just based on asking them rather than observations in the wild.

Perhaps Nissan drivers are the biggest liars?

The last time I had a driver behave like that he was driving a Nissan! He seemed to object to me using the bus lane and holding him up , when I stopped and asked him why he was using the bus lane, he rectified the problem by driving the next 20yds, to the red light, on the pavement.

Because these type of drivers are more important, and therefore getting in their way is simply wrong!

I like the IAM's stance on this

Sounding your horn when you are close will startle them, maybe into swerving in front of you. They will usually be aware of you already! Slow down around cyclists and drive smoothly. Keep within the speed limit.

Cyclists are advised to take a prominent position in the road well ahead of any manoeuvre to ensure they are in the right place at the right time. If they ride in the middle of the road it is probably not to obstruct your path, but to ensure that they are seen by you and by other motorists.
Cyclists often ride at some distance from the kerb to avoid drains and potholes and to discourage motorists from squeezing them on narrow roads. It is not in their interest to delay motorists deliberately. Remember too that their ability to signal is limited compared to ours, so try to anticipate what they might do from the position they have taken on the road. Please be patient.

Now why am I surprised that these drivers are unaware of Advanced Motoring techniques and attitudes?

Some silly knob in a generic mpv just hooted me.. Raining hard, strobing lights on (me), hi viz jacket, clear straight rode! What did he want me to do? Jump in the hedge? :gun:

I nearly did out anyway as he made me jump!

Other half recons he was either a) wishing me a happy new year. Or b) saying 'what are you out in this rain for you lycra clad loony?'

I can't recall anyone honking their horn behind me, though occasionally I've have some uneceessary engine revving going on when a car driver has been held up on a hill.
However, many times I've heard a horn being sounded by a car coming from the opposite direction. Invariably it's because somebody has tried to squeeze passed me on a bend. It happens time and time again. I need to get better at adopting primary.

The other time that I hear a horn being sounded is as a pathetic response to my use of the Air Zound! Some drivers seem to think that their manhood has been insulted if a cyclist uses a loud horn!

I can't remember any one hooting in my presence, apart from people I know who seem to think it is a form of friendly greeting.
I'd far rather they just stopped for a chat but........

Just to balance the discussion

A day from the diary of a BMW driver...

The other day I was cruising along as usual coming onto one of my motorways, which was very busy with inferior cars.
First off, I couldn't believe that the volume of traffic DIDN'T slow down for me AT ALL as I came off the slip road!
I had to squeeze into a barely big enough gap between two cars in order to get onto my motorway!
The driver of the car behind me did realise his mistake though and honked an apology to me with a long blast of his horn.
Unbelievably, I had to do the same again before I could get to the BMW lane.
Anyway, once I was in the BMW lane and posing along at 110 mph enjoying the adulation that the inferior car drivers were giving me,
I noticed an inferior car ahead of me which was not only in the BMW lane of my motorway, but was driving at a ridiculous 70 mph!
Naturally, I got within a foot or so of his rear bumper and flashed my headlights to remind him he shouldn't be in the BMW lane of my motorway and to get out of my way.
Of course, once he realised it was a BMW behind him, he did just that, but I could hardly believe it when he pulled straight back out behind me!
He also tried to keep up with me and when he realised I would out-run him, he put on some blue lights in his front grill and urged me to get onto the hard shoulder so that he could congratulate me on my excellent car.
Needless to say, I was eager to oblige and when we had stopped, the man gave me a piece of paper confirming what I already knew - that my car goes fast!
Apparently he wants everyone to know what a superior car I have, so I had to take my drivers licence to a police station to be sent away to have some points put on!
(They're not free points either - they're £20 each and I was only allowed 3.)

But the man at the police station said that because I drive a BMW, it won't be much longer before I earn the full 12 points, and then I won't even NEED a driving licence, so they will take it off me!

See, now THAT'S the sort of respect you get when you own and drive a BMW!
