So I test rode a genesis cyclecross today. I have always rode flat handlebars and it felt weird at sometime I felt unsafe. I also felt that my back was aching after a short ride which I do not get on the flat bar ride. Is this typicAl if riding a different position? Also felt the saddle in the genesis not too comfy and at £1100 is should be so what saddle would people suggest?

Really like the look if genesis but nit as comfy as my crosstrail

Completely different type of bike...why are you wanting drops as you don't seem enthused? Look at a top end flat bar like a Whyte Sterling?

Saddles are utterly personal, nothing to do with the cost of the bike...trial and error + good padded shorts

I do like the genesis look. Just not too convinced with it in the trails paths that all. If I go for the genesis might go for the extra brakes in the middle of the bar but then I am not sure where the lights will go

It's what you get used too. I've been raised on drops and to me flat bar bikes are uncomfortable, but I'm sure with time I'd adapt.
The benefit of drops are more hand positions for long distances and improved aerodynamics for increased speed. I'm sure you'd soon get used to it.

I ride a criox de fer and changed the saddle for a charge spoon. Same looks but a big difference in comfort. Drop bars offer a variety of hand positions for a long ride which is also more comfortable for your back. Which Genesis are you looking at?

You'll be fine as long as you don't use a narrow 38cm bar like me!!

What size bike are you looking at? A bit of googling, you can usually figure out the standard bar width

The black croix de feir on Evans at £1100. I am not sure what bars it has got. Just the standard?
Mmmm ..... Nice!

The bike will take all the punishment from rough roads but you don't get the confident steering on the loose surface as you would on a mtb. Think of the Croix as a sports / tourer rather than cyclo cross as its weight is the penalty.
