Not necessarily. Some people manage to get through life enjoying the odd shot of drugs and alcohol without becoming addicted. I think it depends on your personality.

A colleague of mine has received a diagnosis of bone marrow cancer. He and I had a chat about things we'd like to experience before we die and we agreed we would like to try cocaine, just to see what all the fuss is about. The coca plant is now involved in the movement of significant amounts of cash around the planet and the drug is widely used socially and recreationally, so what's it got that alcohol hasn't got?

I had a boss who said the same about heroin. Interesting for a bucket list item. Paris-Brest-Paris is on my bucket wish list. We are all different.

Hasn't alcohol been killing tens of thousands of people since Mankind started riding around on horses and in cars and boats?
