If you want to have a go at dry-stone walling, hedge-laying or other countryside crafts, improve or maintain your local nature areas, and meet some sound people they're the people to contact.

Most areas have a local, affiliated group. If not, weekend courses and week-long working holidays are available, but you have to pay for these.

The how-to books are excellent IMO like this:

Dry stone walls fascinate me too. I have tried my hand at walling and as long as you stick to the principle of always overlapping gaps it isn't too hard to build a decent-ish wall. Having nice flat even stones helps; the ones that amaze me are the ones in the bottoms of the Lake District valleys that are built from round river boulders, these are very difficult to do well.

Mind you Graham, it's taken me 4 years to paint our hall, so it will probably remain an idea!
