I was under the impression that the car was serviced & MOT'd at the same time, surely it would be picked up on the service, before heading off to the MOT bay
The MOT is a fixed price, £57(?) for 1.25-1.4hrs work.
Service work is typically upwards of a hundred, plus VAT. So a full pre MOT check is chiming in at £140+ VAT.
So it's significantly less expensive to do the test first, and then rectify any points found during the service, rather than do a service and a pre MOT check and an MOT.
In any event, most services are little more than an oil and filter change and basic visual safety check of limited components and won't duplicate many of the checks from the MOT such as emissions, play in suspension and steering, yadda yadda - you'd have to to the expensive pre MOT check to to be assured of switching any MOT faults. Its simply easier and less expensive to do the MOT first.
But as regards the test itself a good tester won't so much as remove an air freshener from the rear view mirror.
