It on a motorway for long enough and you'd be surprised how your speed can creep up. I was passing Heathrow on a GSX750 some years back havcing been on the M4 all the way from Wales when I thought I'd better back off as I was gaining on a police patrol car. Thinking I must be doing about eigthy I glanced down at the speedo to see 110.

I agree. I've been riding bikes for 30 years. On the bullshit stakes motorbikes and riders are a close second to fishing.

Ooh, despite his anti small cubes & scooter views I agree with Drago here. Maybe 12 years or so ago I swapped my Honda Dominator 650 + cash for a Honda CBR1000 that was in Newark. On the way home up the A1 I'd look down and be startled to see very license losing figures on the speedo when I thought I was doing 70 ish. Cocooned in a still bubble of air I could have done 150mph+ in absolute comfort whereas the Dominator had my head rattling about at 70mph. I sold the CBR for a naked XJR1300 withing weeks (& one ride to the lake district), just to stop me speeding.

Chap I used to work with had always commuted on big bikes. Nevertheless, things came to a head when he traded his FJ twelve against a ZZR1400. First commute he looked down at the Speedo expecting the see about sixty, but was in reality pulling a very pedestrian and relaxed 110, with the big Zed barely ticking over in top The damn thing was an absolute Bugatti buster, and without even meaning to do so was getting to work very quickly indeed.

The FJ12 is no slouch in the "but I was only bimbling along" stakes either.

You are right, but..........120mph on a CBR1000 felt well slower than 70mph on the Dominator that's for sure.

I'm always fully aware of my speed in a car, but on a bike apart from sticking rigidly to the 30 and 40 limits I flew by the seat of my pants. That's the reason if I got one now I'd be looking at a 125 trail bike or a 250 for the road.

Very fond memories of Suzuki RG 500. Wish an updated version could be made, that bike was one of the biggest rushes you could possibly imagine

Indeedy. My Max sends the landscape into rewind at a frightening rate of knots, and I've ridden a couple of FJ's and they felt similarly brutal, but I'm told the Zed 1400 is a different magnitude of insanity altogether.

To be honest I personally prefer middleweights. Quick enough to humble all but the most exotic cars, but you have to work at it, the speed isn't such a casual thing and they feel more exciting for it, hence being quite attached to my Fizzer. Not only that, the early R6 at full chat was one of the horniest sounding 4 cylinder bikes ever.

I bought the Max about 10 years ago from a mate who'd gone all soft and bought a Hardly Gravyboat, just because it is the most brutal looking machine I'd ever seen. If you were Mad Max, The Punisher, or perhaps Satan himself on the prowl for a new bike to commute to work on then the V-Max would be it.

A lot of modern crap like catalytic converters etc don't help things on the style front.

GG good luck on that one. Apparently I am on my last bike which is a GS1200, well that's what my wife says. Like you I see a bike and get smitten with it but finances dictate otherwise. As you probably know Triumph this week announced their new Bobber and to me it looks really cool.
But after watching BSB I felt determined to get a Fireblade as I do after I have been to the TT. At 65 I should really grow up but the funny thing is when I go out on my GS I just love it. Not the fastest bike but great in cornering, engine brakings , brilliant and a great field of vision. Seat could be better though. So perhaps my other half is right this really could be my last bike.
