If I was splashing out on a good coat for a man I would go for a top notch trenchcoat.

I'm sorry to inject a tawdry note, but a duffle coat can never be sexy.

A reefer/peacoat/naval jacket, yes. Duffle, nuh-uh.

Also a duffle can't ever really look smart so has more limited deployment opportunity.

Slightly OT...

When I was younger I spent some time in HMP Rollestone ( I hasten to say on the correct side of the wire)

At the time one of the lads was an Ian Dury fan and wanted a donkey jacket.

So he misappropriated a Prison service one with a blue shoulder insert. Decorated it with suitable slogans and decided to wear it out one night in Portsmouth......... a night which was quickly stopped when he was stopped by Police who had assumed he was an escapee!

spending time in my past in some hostile conditions ,i had a north face parka,they are not cheap but last for time,and are greats bit of kit,my favourite coat for on the move is my faithful montane mountain jacket,had it 20 years still great,can wear it with just a wick layer and has vents to stop over heating
