Oh and trying to paint over a dark colour is like about 5 coats. Never again.

I think the trick is to plaster it on rather than paint it on.

As above, never again. May as well save time and paint all gloss surfaces in a pale yellow instead of white, as that's what they will be anyway in 3-4 months anyway.
