I get in from my ride having jus tbeen nearly murdered by car driver...to find a letter from DVLA demanding I pay £20 to send in a new photograph. If I dont it will cos tme £1000 and my licence. This is jus tto update the photo. So I have to do the passport machine thing at lord knows how much, then pay them £20 on top. 'Tis bollox I say. How does sticking a photo on my licence cost them £20????

The day is fast approaching in my life when I will leave cars behind forever,if i use th edam thing once a week thats a lot ...

hmmmm...when I'm prime minister.

If you've renewed your passport in the last few years they can use that picture and signature. And that can be done online.

I found that out after I paid a fiver for crappy pics.

It also says on the form that the Post Office will take the picture for you.

What it doesn't say on the form is that the Post Office will charge £4.50 for the privilege....

Quite possibly a money-making exercise, also id cards by the back door, but I believe the photo licences are issued with DVLA conditions attached, amongst which is renewal every ten years .

Typically your insurance will exclude you from being insured if the are not complying with any terms or conditions that may apply to the driving licence. As the DVLA issue the licence with a requirement to renew the 'photo every ten years, failure to do this is likely to invalidate your insurance.

So if yo don't renew (and many don't) you would be driving not in accordance with your licence and also driving without insurance.

I updated mine last year and used an older photo from a set taken at work for id cards. I look the same anyway so it didn't matter.
However a month later, I almost sent off a second £20 for my HGV licence until I read the small print that said if I had recently renewed my car licence then I wouldn't need to renew for the HGV part!
