It's not new.
We see a good few electric delivery van/bikes in London, they've been around for a few years now.
DHL, DPD and UPS seem to be the majority but there are a few other companies running them, Evri and Amazon.

It's seems to stretch the legal definition of a what a pedal assist cycle is as the pedals don't propel the "bike" but sets the motor in motion

And being restricted to a 250W motor, it doesn't help much with an uphill start from a set of lights or a junction. Even when the only load is the rider. Loaded they're nigh on impossible without cooperation from other road users.

I think it plays on the novelty value to get other road users to help you.

The max output is much higher than that ,the 250w an average over an hour , have you watched the video ? . They race a ex pro up hill and the E bay only just loses and the ex pro is well out of breath and the E biker hasn't broken sweat

Over 250 watts from the motor and what is shown, and said, at the start is out the door. It requires a licence, insurance(driver and vehicle) and registering. A motorcycle helmet is required is something else to consider, before you part with your £14,000.*

True - in theory

but the Max 250W is an average and the actual definition is rather woolly

so some of the "road legal" mtb ebikes can have a max power well over 250W for a short while

or so I have read in some places
not sure that I actually understand the electronically type stuff in that so it might just work by fiddling the numbers

but riding that around a large estate - and to and from it - would be a good workout for the employee with a full load of boxes and all the superstructure and stuff

Looks like the type of thing that would cost 15 grand now, to get all the rich companies to tick a sustainability box. But maybe when ICE vehicles are banned altogether (in London for a start) they would become more popular and cheaper. It does make sense when lots of journeys are not limited by speed but by volume of traffic

but with 4 wheels it is limited to car type access
it can use proper wide cycle paths but would not be popular on the normal narrow ones - especially on a shared path system where they would only fit on by taking up half the width of teh whole thing

so they might not be much faster if there is traffic

In 2018-ish I was in Antwerp on business. I had an early morning meeting and to get there I had to walk through an area that seemed to have a lot of warehouses. It was around 7:30 am, the day was just getting going, and there seemed to be a stream of e-cargo bikes emerging from each warehouse.

Have you watched GCN before? I'm guessing not . I don't mind the Top Gear style of presentation as we know it's usually popular given the right presenters, and GCN are usually pushing a pro-cycling, pro-active travel, pro-action-on-climate-change message. They've got almost 3.5m subscribers so while they keep pushing such positive messaging, I'm happy for them to go with whatever style they think is the most effective.
