I guess a band for ear muff would have a similar effect.

Skull cap is good, although I always feel vaguely medieval and monastic when I wear it.

However the absolutely most brilliant thing for head warmth on winter rides is the Rapha Winter Cap.

It has a peak to keep the low winter sun from your eyes and the winter drizzle from your face, and there is a sort of inner layer that tucks away inside when it isn't super cold but can be pulled down over your ears when it is.

I'm not a Raphaphile - indeed until recently, when I became the birthday recipient of a soft-shell jacket, it was the only piece of Rapha kit I had ever bought. (So technically that's still true although I have to admit I may have hinted at the buying of the soft-shell.)

But the hat is one of those things that is functional, attractive, well-made, long-lasting and does everything it should do perfectly well.

There are other similar styles out there - and much cheaper Lord knows - but I've never seen one that is quite as good and ticks all those boxes.

+1 on the Rapha cap. Pricey at £30 but a great bit of kit when it gets nippy.

Get some headphones! (Scuttles off and lurks in background having started yet another music while riding bun fight)

"Psssst, it's Ok Glow worm, you can come out now...I think you got away with that one."

Skull cap for me, I like the warm ears and also the top of my head gets cold at really low temps, so I like the all round toastyness.

I intend to use an old Ski jobby, if its good enough for -30 its good enough for Londinium

Skull cap and helmet of course.

You wear a helmet to keep your ears warm?? How very odd, there is no good reason for wearing a helmet other than as a fashion statement which is all they are good for...
