A buff, or a skull cap, I can hear through them fine. They'll keep the wind noise out too.

Another vote for a Buff. It works brilliantly for a thin material.

I tend to use a skull cap thingummy and, while it does reduce the sound level a bit, it reduces a fair range of frequencies so you can still hear the traffic but everything's just that bit quieter.

Aldi cycle beanie in winter and a headband on windy spring/autumn days. I suffer from ear ache if I let the wind in too much.

I wear a buff and a woolly hat in winter, having thinning hair, (To say the least!) I feel the cold on top even when it's not that cold.

Just tell a couple of your friends the times when you'll be cycling, and get them to talk about you while you are riding- sorted
