Earth by night pic - Australia?

Below is one of a series of really nice images of the Earth by night. The rest can be seen here. What puzzled me is that in Australia the largest light sources are slap bang in the middle of nowhere, right in the desert where there are no population centres at all. What's that all about then?

Not quite sure what's going on there. Go to the flat image and the light representation is completely different.

I'd guess to make the sphere they wrapped the flat satellite image in photoshop. As redcard said, photoslop
