East Enders - social responsibility?

I am NOT a fan of soaps, but after a discussion at work today I am watching East Enders!

There is a story line about one of the characters called Patrick has had a stroke...... and apparently his portrayal is very true to life.

Having seen a few minutes and yes it is an effective, and emotional portrayal which reflects the issues surrounding stroke victims, but it is rather lost in the rest of the melodrama

It could be a lot more effective and raise awareness more if not lost in the rest of the melodrama

But your right. They are s×××e . As soon as I hear the theme tunes I grab the remote to turn to another channel any channel will do

They are supposed to reflect real life and educate, if that is true then how come my colleague who watches every episode of EastEnders, Emmerdale and Corrie is completely ignorant regarding real life matters

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
The words eastenders or any soap in conjunction with the words well portrayed, do not go hand in hand with each other in my experience

I remember a while back being at a party and being asked, "so who do you think did Cain then?"

I didn't have a clue what he was talking about, turns out it was a storyline in Emmerdale.

After his daughter told him I didn't watch it he looked at me with a look of incredulity and asked, "what you don't watch Emmerdale?"

I proudly said no.

What I should have said was, "have a word with your self Ray you're a 65 year old bloke."

Maybe I'm being unkind to eastenders, after all the last time I watched it there was some girl screaming the words RICKY like a banshee. My ears started to bleed. I was in danger of having an immediate nervous breakdown.

Are they? I thought they were dramas. Whether you think they're sh*te or not, I'm not really sure the remit of a soap opera is to provide education or social instruction in priority over dramatic entertainment - even if some of them try to, some of the time.
