Hi everyone
New to this forum so not sure if i am in the correct forum.
My brother used to ride for a team in the early 1960s which I think was called the Eastway then in East London but not if it was called that then.
My brother is no longer with us but I used to watch him ride.
What i am trying to find out what the track and team was called so that i can update his daughter.
I have vivid memories of him putting on his coloured vest before riding.
I don't think that the track is no longer there as that part of East London has changed.
If anyone can help i will be very grateful.

The Eastway Cycle Circuit was where the Olympic Park is now. I only started cycling in 1974 so I don’t have any knowledge of it before then. I remember going to watch Francesco Moser race there in the 70’s. It was near Mile End tube station, if I remember correctly. The circuit was demolished when they started to build the Olympic Park, but there was a replacement circuit built after the Olympics, now called the Lee Valley Velo Park, next to the Veldrome. In the meantime, there was also a new circuit built at Hog Hill, near Hainault, a bit further out of London, so that racing could continue in the run up to the 2012 Olympics and beyond.

Ive not heard of a team called Eastway, but they could have been before my time.

I raced at Eastway once, in a Peter Fryer race( National series for vets). It was about 4 or 5 bikes wide and not being that great in tight bunches, I managed to get off the front and in to a break for 49 miles of the 50 mile race, we were caught with about a lap to go.I’m fairly sure that the circuit was a mile long and it did have a hill or drag on one side of the circuit. This would be in 1990’s, there was a club house and bar I think.

The track was almost certainly Herne Hill Velodrome. It was the main track in London then and is still there. Many clubs and teams used it. The most famous pro team based there was The Archer Road Club. If he had a coloured vest, he was likely a first-category racer. Your best bet is to contact the Herne Hill Velodrome trust; they have great archives and might be able to help identify his team.
