On a point of information - G d Nord -> G d Lyon you don't have to change RER trains. Still a royal PITA with a bagged bike though...

Happy to be corrected - I took the first train that came along and then changed.

Yes it's a PITA but no worse than hauling a bike bag round an airport, queuing to get through security, queuing to have your shoes x-rayed queuing to get a seat, sitting on the aircraft waiting for a slot etc etc

BTW, Eurostar leaves London at 9:53 and gets to Lyon at 16:00 local time (changing at Lille).

There is the odd direct TGV from Lille to Grenoble - or at least there was last summer, because I saw it on the departure board while awaiting my connection to Strasbourg. Only up one lift/escalator and down another from one train to the other.
