How did this go for such a low price?
  • Supply and demand at the time of the sale?
  • Badly written advert? (for instance, what if I don't "save half your journey time", unlike his "guarantee")
  • With crappy pictures? (no pix or details of his "floppy wheel")
  • No size information, or age, or condition of components like tyres, C&S, pads, cables etc.
  • Using the word "racer" when most on ebay look for something not racy?
  • Single-speed rather than 27 (mostly-unused) gears on a grip-shifter?
I have more if you want, but that should be enough to get started on.

If the "power is incredible" and it can "save half your time", its definitely sold too cheaply! Although, it probably saves half your journey time because you take the car instead.

Quite a few things on ebay go cheaply if theyre pick up only, drastically cuts down the number of bidders and most of the time the seller will let you arrange your own delivery anyway they just cba organising it.

The trouble of not restricting to cash on pick up is packing. You will have to go get a box, dismantle various bits, and pack the bits carefully so they don't destroy each other in transit. Further if you let a buyer arrange and pay for courier you would not be able to charge a premium for all that work via elevated p&p, and given you will likely be paid via Paypal you lose another 3.5% or so of the selling price on top of the 10% sales fees which you will never recoup. Further with cash on pickup the buyer can kick the tyres before money changing hand so it is easy to insist No Return as well as assuring everybody is happy. In places like London where the market is deep imho and ime posting bikes is just not worth it.

Possibly, but still another reason why the price might be suppressed.

Not if the same seller turned down a £150 offer for that same bike 5 days earlier on same pick up only basis. As I mentioned the price is lowish but not outstandingly low, any difference from any norm could just be down to chance imho.

I was thinking in a more broad context than just cycling stuff, but I totally agree. A seller should either stick to cash only or offer their own postage they can add a little markup too for the effort involved.

As a buyer, ive bought a couple of non-cycling things where it said "pickup only" including a large caravan awning located in cornwall for my parents, which went very cheap (presumably most of the UK cant get to cornwall to pick up an item so didnt bid), but on asking they were more than happy for us to arrange a courier. I probably wouldnt do it with a bike as id rather kick the tyres and grumble first, but as well as distance selling regulations, ebay seems very biased towards the buyer being able to get money back.
