ebay problem

I recently sold an item on ebay

The buyer claims to have not received the item and ebay have forced me to refund the money
So, just like that, I'm out of pocket - no money, no item

I didn't send the item recorded delivery, but I do have 'proof of postage' from the post office
my only hope to get some of the money back is to claim for a lost parcel from Royal Mail - is this easy to do, and what are my chances?

If you have proof of postage you can claim from the Royal Mail. You just have to fill in a form. The maximum amount isn't great but it's something. You might be able to claim on line these days.

You've got proof from the buyer that the item hasn't been delivered too so should be a little easier to claim.

It's all about proof of delivery I'm afraid, proof of posting 'aint worth a toss IME, apart from allowing you to claim from the RM as 400 says.

Chalk it upto experience, make your RM claim and move on.

I had that happen to me a while ago.
All I could do was to put in a claim against the PO. It took a while though as they don't allow a claim to be initiated until some time has passed after the parcel hasn't arrived. Then they only refund on the Ebay documentation so any other out of pocket expenses are not covered.

Good luck with it, you will need patience and a lot of paperwork.

Having remembered about the RM's painful claim process I was mid-edit when you tripped me up

thanks everyone - I'll try claiming from RM but it sounds like a nightmare.
next time I'll only send stuff recorded delivery - actually might not bother using ebay again - the fees are a rip-off anyway!

Proof of Postage is OK for a claim up to £46.

It happens - I get about 1 in 20 buyers claim non-delivery, of which I believe half at best. There's quite a few just try it on, knowing there's no proof.

My Kask helmet, which I sold on eBay last week - went Special Delivery. I paid the extra £3 cost on top of what it would've been since it sold for far more than I'd expected and I was nervous of a claim.

Usually eBay's fine for me. I've items on now and I sold 20 things last week.

It's the most recent scam. Another is to pay by Paypal, then go and collect the item in person. A day or two later open a dispute saying that the item has not been sent. The seller loses because they cannot prove delivery. It costs 95p more to get a signature on a parcel, and because people are doing this sort of thing then I simply add another couple of quid onto the P&P costs and point out in my sales text that I will post or courier the item insured and signed for.
