That link started me looking at the other gramophone stuff on there - interesting because I have a 1933 HMV portable and a small collection of records including an Elvis 78. It's the loudest record I own, you have to stuff a sock down the horn to reduce the volume.

My pal and I used to play his Dad's records in his shed while we fettled bikes after school. Occasionally we'd get sick of a tune so we'd chuck a brick at it. Terrible thing to do really.

We used to melt old 45s over a saucepan to make ashtrays!
