I'm selling my old Royce BB on here: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270475024851&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT

The bids went from £20 to £22 to £32 to £41 and now £42. The same bidder bid up by £10 then by £9, over one day before the end of the auction. Of course I'm pleased but what kind of person bids a price up by £10, twice, against himself? My usual technique for something I really want is to bid in the last five seconds, I've won some great stuff that way.

Amazing.

Looking at the bid history I cannot see what you mean about bidding against himself. Bidder no 3 placed 2 bids but they were not as high as bidder no 2.

But would agree that people pay over the odds and like you I normally only bid in the last few seconds

Eh? I don't follow you - the bloke who bid twice went and upped the price by £10 each time for no particular reason, didn't he?

Bidder 2 has obviously put in a high bid. Bidder 3 upped his bid twice but it is still not as high as no 2.

If im following you correctly your saying bidder A was winning then bid again thus bidding against himself?

If thats so, you cant do that. Ebay will keep your highest bid on record, and only up it if you are out bid by someone else. Hope thats as clear as mud lol

That was what I thought was happening.

Tomorrow evening is going to be interesting.

Its is of course silly to put in your maximum bid too early, as the unscrupulous types out there will have someone bidding an item up to get more for it.

I usually put in my max bid with about 20 seconds to go,this prevents the above.

Bid sequence:

  • Bidder 1: £22
  • Bidder 2: £42.15+
  • At this point the Item will appear to have a bid of £23 showing with bidder 2 being the top bidder.
  • Bidder 3 steps in with a bid of £32.27 and is instantly beaten by Bidder 2's bid which ratchets the price to £33.27
  • Bidder 3 then up's his bid to £41.15 and is again beaten by Bidder 2's higher bid
Bidder 3 might be flushing out the higher bid before making a last minute snipe and clearly had (s)he left things for a last minute snipe with either of the bids posted so far (s)he would have lost anyway.
