My Mum (from Yorkshire) used to make something resembling Eccles cakes but it was called fly pie.

I've never heard of Chorley cakes this side of the Pennines. I assume they are similar but less famous than their Eccles cousins?

Less famous!!! 😱 You're right they're cousins. The main difference is the pastry. Eccles is flakey or puff pasty, Chorley cakes use short crust. An Eccles cake is sweeter.

Remember Chorley cake must be eaten with butter spread on top. It's the law.

I like Eccles cakes so much I have been tempted to try making my own giant one using two whole sheets of ready rolled puff pastry and half a kilo of the finest currants I can find. When I make Barm Brack I soak the fruit for a minimum of 24 hours, usually in either tea or strong coffee together with 100ml of whisky, for the Eccles cake orange juice and cherry brandy might be worth trying 🤔

Defo less famous as we've never heard of them!
Short crust, you say, sounds like the poor cousin 🤣

I thought fly pie was a knickname for an Eccles cake.
