Fish and chips

On another site there is a discussion about the rising cost of fish and chips; since I was planning to eat fish and chips as my main meal of the day on my upcoming LeJog (off a food truck or a chippy if possible), the costs quoted are absurd, so what is the alternative, bangers and mash, or what ...?

What do people find to eat reasonably in towns and villages when cycling and on a budget these days?

Co-op meal deals are good + two Belgian buns will get me through the day.

Also get the pasty as the snack and it's another meal in itself!

I usually ride a few miles before breakfast it breaks up the day tbh.

one of the drawbacks of touring and staying in hotels, GH's and B&B's is that breakfast is often served too late

Just how far are you riding each day? Most places will serve breakfast no later than 8am, some as early as 7am. Meaning even a 100 mile day will be finished by 6pm or so. If you truly are leaving too early, most will leave some breakfast items out for you.

OP, you aren't thinking fish and chips each evening, surely ? I think you need to plan LeJog better and find out where you can eat. You'll pass shops etc. Camping or B&B ? Friends did Lejog a few years ago, but they planned well and ate like kings - just plan where to stop.

I've done a few off road bike packing trips with friends, and we've always planned stops, as there isn't much when you are miles from roads and towns. We were well fed. At one overnight camp stop, we knew we'd arrive after the pub finished serving food (a few hours later) so we just stopped at a Co-op and grabbed some food (sandwiches, snacks and drinks). It's not hard.

If you don't know how much fish and chips have gone up, I guess you don't but it often. We probably go once a month, but we split two fish between three and one large chips will do three of us. the price of fish has gone up, just like beef has rocketed.

Do you order your sit down Fish n Chips, in a chip shop restaurant, like the olden days with bread and butter and mushed peas?

I believe I have always eaten my fish and chips in the paper, either standing or walking - they used to be wrapped in newspaper and we would take used newspapers to the chip shop for them to use - and often eaten with bread and butter, but never with mushed anything - except the chips were mushey sometimes.
