Parkgate fish and chips near me (well sort of) is the best I've found locally, cost is around £12. The chippy just around the corner is about £9.

It's quite sad that what was once a cheap staple is now a borderline luxury, but with inflated fuel and food costs, it's not entirely surprising. If I was doing something like lejog though I'd budget for it though for sure. Worth it for the comfort factor.

Generally though I get a sausage dinner as it's cheaper and comes with gravy.

Been there a few times!!

when I lived alone I used to mainly get pie and chips
then bung a small tin of beans in the microwave when I got them home

Fish is lovely - but chip shop pies are as well and much cheaper - normally

We have now found a plaice, nearer home on Street Lane less than ten mins away. One small portion two mediums two pops one zero beer, all of this is £18 cheaper than a very famous chippy in Yeadon. It makes sense for us,and they are very very nice.

I used to collect discarded newspapers from the street, bus seats, tube trains etc and I would take them to the chippy on the high street and swap them for a bag of scraps. This was London in 1955 plenty of real fish and chip shops then. My newspapers were used to wrap the fish n chips for the general public. Such happy days.

I've had Pollock before and it was cheaper, and just as nice as cod. I couldn't really tell the difference. I don't see it in chippies now, I wonder if it's scarce now as well

I was told to ask for Rock Salmon, chips and mushy peas when sent to buy the evening meal I was given 3/- and told to bring the change home.

Mushy Peas, non of this beans nonsense
Curry sauce... none of this peas or beans nonsense!

is 'cheap as chips' still a saying? It's almost ironic these days considering the cost of a humble bag of chips.

Used to go there while on my New Brighton to Chester(ish) rides. Fish n chips were always good.
When my wife and i went to Parkgate for a walk/bird watching we would share a portion then walk along to the ice cream parlour.....meals fit for a king.

Never went to Parkgate for that

If we were having chips as teenagers we generally went to West Kirby

which might just possibly been connected to some girls from the High School that lived around there rather than the quality of the chips!

Later on I used to go to a F&C shop in Moreton run by a Cypriot and his English wife

She was so fussy about the quality that when a fish was cooked she refused to give it to you until it had spent a couple of minutes draining in the cabinet
not just draining - but leant vertically in the hot cabinet so it drained through the bottom tip
so the batter on the bottom didn;t get soggy and it was all crispy

After going there for a few years they sold it and went to Cyprus to open a Taverna - bet that taverna was good!!

Although,as you know, I lived in Moreton for a time I don't recall ever going to any chippy there. I suppose i must have done but just can't recall it.

The good one was up the main road heading towards Bidston - and the Jet petrol Station
in a small block of shops along there

There was also a not so good one that was diagonally across The Cross (a weird shaped roundabout) from us and somewhere near there

for a while we went to the one on the corner just before the Meols straight, which was pretty good for a while

all of which is clearly of great interest to the majority of people on here!!!
