I can distantly remember it, but no details of why. Saw him on DIY SOS once, he helped on a project, seemed as nice as I thought he was when an olympian.

Yes it was disgraceful.
He got a lot of stick here because he was seen as being a no hoper. In fact he was a true amateur in the days when that was important and although he wasn't perfect at jumping he was a good skier. Very good.
He was seen in this country as a bit of a joke. He wasn't.
He was a competitor who was outclassed, and there is no shame in that.

He was on channel 4 the 'last leg' the other night and was talking about how he funded himself for the Olympics and had no insurance. He said he slept in his car and ate from donations and at times from bins. He has no regrets over it either, seemed to be a really nice bloke
